Where did the name World Series come from?

If you watched the Yankees broadcast last night on MY9, you might have heard them talking about where the name World Series came from. They originally said that it was sponsored by The New York World newspaper and that the name was kept after the paper stopped publishing. But, a few innings later the broadcast team said that the theory was being debunked on Twitter. This is true as the theory had been disproved by many people over the years.
